Riyadh Season with friends: how to make a night of it

By the TruFriend team · · 7 min read

Riyadh Season 2026 opens on 21/10/2026. How to enjoy it with new friends rather than alone in a crowd, from choosing the right night to the coffee before and the plan after.

Last winter, Khalid went to Riyadh Season on his own. He had moved to the city a few months earlier and did not want to miss it. The lights were spectacular, the food was good, and there was music everywhere. He left after an hour. "It was the loneliest I felt all year," he said later. "Everyone was there with someone."

This year he is going with five people: two colleagues, a neighbour and two members of a walking group he joined in the spring. They have already argued about which night, which zone and where to eat. That argument, he says, is half the fun.

Riyadh Season 2026 is due to open on 21/10/2026, with around ten weeks of concerts, shows, sport, food and family attractions across the city, including zones such as Boulevard World and Boulevard City. It is one of the biggest things to happen in Riyadh every year. It is also, if you plan it well, one of the best opportunities to turn acquaintances into friends.

Big events are better as a third plan than a first

Large events are crowded and loud. It is hard to hear each other, easy to lose each other, and the evening can feel like a series of queues. That makes them a poor first meeting with someone new. But with people you have already met two or three times, a big shared experience is exactly what moves a friendship forward: something to plan together, something to remember, something to talk about for weeks.

So if you have been meeting someone for coffee or a weekly game, Riyadh Season is the perfect next step. Suggest it now, while the dates are fresh.

Why shared experiences build friendships

Psychologists who study friendship point to the power of shared novelty. When people experience something new and exciting together, they tend to feel closer afterwards. The memory belongs to both of you, and it becomes part of your story: "remember the night we got lost looking for the car?" A big, colourful event like Riyadh Season is full of exactly that kind of novelty.

That is also why going with the same small group more than once can work so well. A first visit is an adventure. A second visit becomes a tradition. By the end of the season, the group has its own jokes, its own favourite food stall and its own story, and that is what friendship is made of.

Make it a small group

Four to six people is the sweet spot. Big enough that nobody has to carry the conversation, small enough to stay together and fit around one table. It is also a gentle way to mix circles: bring one friend from work and one from your padel game, and let them meet.

Pick the right night

Weekends and opening weeks are the busiest. If your group can manage it, a weekday evening is usually calmer, with shorter queues and more room to talk. Check the official Riyadh Season channels for opening hours, tickets and what is on in each zone before you go, because schedules and ticketing change through the season.

Agree on one or two things you really want to see rather than trying to cover everything. A relaxed evening with two highlights beats an exhausting march through every pavilion.

Families and friends together

Riyadh Season is very much a family affair, and that can work in your favour. If your new friends have children, a family-friendly zone on a weekend afternoon lets everyone come along, and the children often make friends faster than the adults. If you are single and your friends are parents, offer to join a family outing rather than waiting for them to find a free evening. Friendships that fit around real life last longer than ones that compete with it.

Coffee before, not just during

The best part of the evening is often the half hour before you arrive. Meet at a café near the zone and have a coffee together first, when you can hear each other properly. It gives the group time to settle, and it means that if the crowds are overwhelming later, the evening already had its good conversation.

Think about everyone's comfort

A good group plan works for everybody. Some people love crowds and loud music, others find them tiring. Some want the big concert, others would rather walk and eat. Ask before you book, and pick an evening that suits the group rather than just the loudest voice. Check what each zone offers for families and quieter visitors, and make sure the plan fits everyone's budget, since tickets and food can add up quickly.

If someone in the group is new to Riyadh, pay attention to them. Explain where you are going, send the location in advance, and wait for them at the entrance rather than inside. Small kindnesses like these are exactly what make a newcomer feel part of the group.

Share the planning

Let different people own different pieces. One books tickets, one chooses where to eat, one sorts out the drive. Shared planning builds a sense of "our" plan, and it stops one person from quietly doing all the work and resenting it.

Travel together where you can, or agree a clear meeting point inside the zone. Parking and traffic around the busiest venues can be heavy, so leave extra time, and consider ride-hailing so nobody has to worry about the car.

Leave room for the after

Some of the best moments of a big night out happen once it is over: a late dinner, a walk back to the car, a stop for karak on the way home. Do not schedule every minute. Let the evening end naturally, and do not be surprised if that is where the real conversation happens.

A few practical tips for the night

  • Charge your phone and agree on a group chat for the evening, so nobody gets lost.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The zones are big and you will walk more than you expect.
  • Bring a light jacket later in the season, when the evenings turn cool.
  • Eat early or book ahead if you want a sit-down meal at the busiest spots.
  • Agree in advance roughly when you plan to leave, so nobody feels stuck.

Follow up while it is fresh

The next day, share the photos in your group chat and suggest the next plan. "That was great. Anyone for a walk on Saturday?" A shared experience gives you an easy excuse to meet again, and the second plan is what turns a fun night into a friendship.

Make it a season, not a night

Ten weeks is a long time. Instead of one big outing, consider a small tradition: one Riyadh Season plan every two or three weeks with the same group, each time somewhere different. One night for a concert, one for food, one for a show, one for simply walking and watching the lights. By January you will have spent more time together than most new friends manage in a year, and it will not have felt like effort at all.

Not everything has to be the big zones

The season also brings smaller, quieter experiences: markets, food spots, cultural shows and outdoor spaces that are easier to enjoy with a small group. And the cool weather that comes with it makes the whole city nicer outdoors, from Wadi Hanifah to Diriyah. Mix a big Riyadh Season night with a few calmer plans, and your winter will be full of reasons to meet.

If you do not have a group yet

If you are new to the city and still building your circle, do not let that stop you. Invite one colleague or neighbour, even someone you only know a little, and suggest an early evening visit with coffee before. Many people would love to go and are simply waiting to be asked. A shared first visit to Riyadh Season is a wonderful way to start a friendship, as long as you keep it small and leave time to talk.
